How This Charity Supports the Community

42 For 42 Incorporated is a veteran-initiated not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting Australian veterans affected by the war in Afghanistan, including those who have fallen, those who continue to struggle with physical and mental health challenges, and their families. The organisation was founded by ex-Army veterans with the aim of creating a community that honours sacrifice while providing practical support and advocacy for veterans and their loved ones.

Mission and Vision

The mission of 42 For 42 Incorporated is to support the families of fallen Afghanistan veterans and those who have returned from active duty, particularly those battling mental illness and injuries sustained during service. The organisation’s vision is to build and maintain a Memorial Garden that honours the 41 veterans who died in Afghanistan and the 42nd, representing those lost to suicide or training incidents. This memorial serves as a symbol of unity, remembrance, and ongoing support for the veteran community.

Main Objectives

  • To honour the memory of fallen Afghanistan veterans and their families through the creation and upkeep of the Memorial Garden.
  • To provide guidance and connect veterans and their families with welfare, rehabilitation, and advocacy services.
  • To foster a supportive, family-friendly environment through community events and activities.
  • To raise awareness about the challenges faced by veterans, including mental health issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and suicide prevention.
  • To build partnerships with veteran service organisations and corporate sponsors to enhance support networks.

Benefiting Groups

The primary beneficiaries are Australian veterans who served in Afghanistan, especially those who have suffered physical or mental health issues, as well as the families of those who have died in service or from related causes. 4242 Afghanistan War Memorial Garden: Honouring Service and Sacrifice

Sean Mulqueen, co-founder of 4242, presents the Afghanistan War Memorial Garden project honouring Operation Slipper veterans. The garden features information boards about the war, a dedicated area for LED and working dogs, and four seats commemorating Australia’s four Victoria Cross recipients.

Against Suncorp Stadium’s backdrop, 41 plaques honour fallen soldiers with their personal histories. The garden’s Green Zone design includes Afghan hill murals, native plants, and a central statue watching over visitors. Fourteen pillars represent each year of Operation Slipper, whilst a 42nd plaque remembers those lost to suicide.

Afghanistan veterans will help build this tranquil memorial space.

A Five-Year Journey of Healing and Remembrance

Sean Mulqueen, struggling after returning injured from Afghanistan in 2010, envisioned the 4242 Memorial Garden to honour fallen mates and their families. Alongside veterans Tom Kelsey and Peter Webb, the five-year journey faced countless challenges and near-abandonment moments.

The garden honours 41 soldiers killed in Afghanistan and a symbolic 42nd representing those lost to suicide upon returning home. Designed by landscape architect Tanya Wood, whose husband served as a commando, the elegant space features information boards, murals, memorial plaques, and quiet reflection areas.

Gold Coast families, veterans, and Disaster Relief Australia united to create this meaningful Brisbane sanctuary for healing and education.
