Established in 1959 by concerned community members wanting better treatment for stray animals, the Animal Welfare League (AWL) has rehomed over 177,000 animals. Operating five rehoming centres across Queensland—including their largest at the Gold Coast—AWL relies on 200+ staff, hundreds of foster carers, and thousands of volunteers.
Caring for 11,000+ animals annually, AWL provided $1.47 million in charitable veterinary support last year through community vet clinics. With no government funding and costs of $700-800 per animal for rehoming preparation, community donations, fostering, and volunteering are essential.

AWL Queensland Foster Care: Giving Shelter Animals the Love They Deserve
Animal Welfare League Queensland urgently needs foster carers across five rehoming centres (Gold Coast, North and South Brisbane, Ipswich, and Beenleigh). Foster coordinator Charmaine explains that anyone can foster—regardless of home type, work schedule, or existing pets—as long as accommodation is pet-friendly and carers can attend appointments.
Foster periods range from two weeks to two months, covering cats, dogs, birds, guinea pigs, and rats with special medical needs, post-surgery recovery, or nursing litters. AWL provides everything: bedding, bowls, food, litter, and free veterinary care—fostering costs nothing.
Foster carers receive first preference to adopt but can continue fostering multiple animals. With supportive community groups and experienced carers mentoring newcomers, fostering saves lives.
