How This Charity Supports the Community
Buderim Men’s Shed Inc is a non-profit, non-commercial community organisation established in early 2011 as an initiative of the Buderim Rotary Club. It provides a safe, friendly, and inclusive environment where men can gather, socialise, and engage in a wide range of hands-on activities, all under the guidance of experienced tradesmen and professionals. Originally operating from temporary premises, the Shed now has a permanent home at 38 Advance Road, Kuluin, offering modern facilities to support its growing membership and community engagement.
Mission and Vision
The mission of Buderim Men’s Shed Inc is to advance the health, wellbeing, and social inclusion of its members through interest-based activities. The vision is to create a welcoming space where men can connect, share skills, and contribute meaningfully to both their personal lives and the broader community. The Shed recognises the importance of social connection for mental and emotional health, especially among men who may be retired, isolated, or seeking new purpose.
Main Objectives
- Provide a supportive and non-judgmental environment where men can meet, share experiences, and form friendships.
- Offer opportunities for members to learn, teach, and practise a variety of manual and creative skills, fostering lifelong learning and personal satisfaction.
- Promote physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing through structured activities and informal social interaction.
- Support the local community by undertaking projects that benefit schools, charities, and other organisations.
- Maintain a safe, accessible, and well-equipped facility that meets the evolving needs of members.
Benefiting Groups
Buderim Men’s Shed Inc primarily serves men over the age of 18, with a focus on those who are retired, semi-retired, or seeking social connection. The Shed is especially valuable for men experiencing life transitions, such as retirement or loss of a partner, who may benefit from the camaraderie and sense of purpose the Shed provides. The organisation also extends its support to the wider community by collaborating with local schools, charities, and community groups, contributing to projects that enhance the social fabric of the Sunshine Coast region.
Types of Services and Activities
The Shed offers a diverse range of activities designed to cater to varied interests and skill levels. These include:
- Woodwork, wood turning, and wood carving—crafting furniture, toys, and decorative items, often donated to charities or sold to support Shed operations.
- Metalwork—including welding, fabrication, and small engine repairs, with opportunities for members to work on personal or community projects.
- Gardening, art, sketching, and leatherwork—encouraging creativity and relaxation in a supportive group setting.
- Computing and discussion groups—promoting digital literacy and meaningful conversation.
- Health and wellbeing programs—focusing on fitness, nutrition, and mental health education.
- Music and instrument playing, library access, and social events—fostering a sense of community and belonging.
Activities are conducted in a convivial atmosphere, with an emphasis on safety, mutual respect, and the sharing of knowledge. The Shed also operates a shop in Buderim village, showcasing members’ craftsmanship and raising funds for ongoing operations.
Buderim Men’s Shed Inc is more than just a workshop—it is a vital community hub that enriches the lives of its members and makes a tangible difference in the local area. By combining practical skills with social connection, the Shed helps men stay active, engaged, and valued members of their community.

Buderim Men's Shed: 350 Members Building Mateship on the Sunshine Coast
Barry Childs, President of Buderim Men’s Shed on the Sunshine Coast, leads an organisation with nearly 350 members. After retirement—golf and travel—blokes seek meaningful activities but often need encouragement. Wives and daughters frequently bring new members, saying “get in there and associate with some of the guys.”
The shed offers 22 different activities: computing, woodworking, woodturning, toy making, metalwork, gymnasium, and talk groups. This non-threatening environment provides opportunities to learn, meet people, and “just have a chat.”
Craig Allingham leads the Health and Wellbeing programme, providing supervised fitness focusing on age-related challenges whilst creating constructive masculinity spaces for discussing health, ageing, and lifestyle changes.

Buderim Men's Shed: A Safe Space for Mateship and Skills on the Sunshine Coast
Men’s sheds provide older men a place to socialise, participate, and give back to their community. Buderim Men’s Shed on the Sunshine Coast is Australia’s largest, with over 240 members attending daily. Men from all walks of life—former managers, company owners, labourers—become equals here.
After retirement, many blokes lack tinkering space. The shed offers solutions: woodworking, belt-making, gardening groups, and skills development. Projects take two to three weeks, all done by hand.
Health and wellbeing programmes include age-specific circuit training building muscle mass and physical skills. It’s a safe space where men talk “shoulder to shoulder,” discovering shared experiences whilst working with tools in hand.
