Chat Loop: Connecting Refugees with English Speakers Through Micro-Volunteering
Dr Raja, a respected Damascus gynaecologist with over 25 years’ experience, now navigates life as a refugee in suburban Brisbane, struggling with everyday English conversation. One of more than 12,000 Syrian refugees accepted since 2016, Raja’s greatest shock was his inability to communicate after fleeing Damascus three years ago.
An experimental app called Chat Loop, created by linguist Michael Mercedes, connects native English speakers with refugees for 10-minute weekly conversations—what volunteers call “micro-volunteering”. The platform provides crucial language practice at appropriate levels, particularly benefiting isolated individuals like young mothers, carers, and war-injured refugees learning from home.

Supporting Refugees through Language Volunteering
At Chatloop LTD., volunteering offers the unique opportunity to assist people in learning a language with just a few minutes of one’s day. Volunteers play a pivotal role in helping refugees feel welcome in their new communities. As highlighted by Joanne, a participant, this initiative allows individuals to engage meaningfully while fitting volunteering into their schedules.
Interested volunteers should complete the application form. Sharing essential details like first name and email facilitates the interview invitation process. It’s important to be over 18, reside in Australia, and possess strong English skills, even if one isn’t a native speaker. This ensures effective feedback for English learners.
