The Council of Deans of Nursing and Midwifery (Australia & New Zealand) Ltd (CDNM) is the peak organisation representing Deans and Heads of Schools of Nursing and Midwifery in universities offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs throughout Australia and New Zealand. It leads and represents nursing and midwifery education and research in higher education institutions, nurturing leadership and advocating for the professions. Established in 1993, CDNM marked 30 years in 2023.
Placement Evaluation Tool (PET) and National Placement Evaluation Centre
The Placement Evaluation Tool (PET), funded by CDNM, enables nursing students and other health professionals to rate their clinical placement experiences, improving placement quality. CDNM co-developed and funded the National Placement Evaluation Centre (N-PEC) to measure and enhance clinical placements in nursing and midwifery through rigorous evaluation and quality improvement.
Mission and Vision
CDNM’s mission is to lead and represent providers of higher education for nurses and midwives. It serves as the leading voice for scholarship and innovation in nursing and midwifery across Australia and New Zealand, fostering leadership in education and research.

- Develop and nurture leadership in nursing and midwifery education.
- Advocate for the professions by shaping education, research, and innovation for professional effectiveness.
- Represent higher education providers to advance the professions.
- Lead collaboration and consultation on education, research, regulation, and workforce needs.

CDNM supports academics, researchers, practitioners, and nursing students pursuing qualifications as registered nurses or midwives through higher education programs in Australia and New Zealand universities.
Types of Services and Activities
- Hosts symposia, such as the 2025 event in Christchurch and 2024 in Darwin, uniting over 300 academics, researchers, and practitioners.
- Organises Research Week to showcase nursing and midwifery research.
- Establishes partnerships, including with Council of Deans of Health UK and Australian Council of Deans of Health Sciences.
- Develops advisory groups like Research and Midwifery Advisory Groups.
- Supports leadership programs and position statements on topics like AI in education.
