Lake Mealup Preservation Society Inc

Lake Mealup Preservation Society Inc is a community-based organisation dedicated to the environmental preservation of Lake Mealup and its surrounding habitats in Nirimba, Western Australia. The society owns and manages a 123.69-hectare sanctuary that includes diverse ecosystems such as jarrah, marri, and tuart woodlands, melaleuca flats, reed beds, and open water areas. This rich environment supports over 100 native flower species, more than 120 bird species, reptiles, western grey kangaroos, and southern brown bandicoots, known locally as quenda. The society actively monitors flora, fauna, and hydrology to maintain the ecological health of the area.

Lake Mealup Environmental Preservation Project

The society’s flagship project is the Lake Mealup Environmental Preservation Project, which focuses on maintaining and restoring the lake’s natural habitats. Key activities include managing water levels through a constructed weir, conducting ongoing flora and fauna surveys, and controlling invasive species. This project ensures the protection of the lake’s biodiversity and supports the sustainability of native wildlife populations in the Peel-Harvey region.
