How This Charity Supports the Community
The Caboolture Community Work Co-operative Ltd is a dynamic social enterprise aimed at creating employment opportunities for people with disabilities in the City of Moreton Bay. The mission is deeply rooted in the belief that meaningful employment plays a critical role in enhancing well-being, self-esteem, and mental health. By providing employment, the Co-operative aims to reduce discrimination and foster social inclusion, thereby easing financial hardships for those with disabilities.
Our History
Established in 2006 with the backing of the disability service provider Homelife, the Co-operative was formed to provide meaningful employment opportunities for its members. Over the years, it has successfully generated thousands of hours of employment in various sectors such as lawn mowing, office cleaning, taxi services, and hospitality.
Understanding Social Enterprises
The Co-operative functions as a ‘purpose-driven’ business, setting a social, environmental, or cultural mission at its core. Its profits are reinvested to fulfil this mission, making it a business for good.
Who Benefits?
The primary beneficiaries are local individuals with diagnosed disabilities who have previously faced discrimination in conventional employment settings. About 95% of the worker/members fall into this category.
Scope of Services
The Co-operative offers a wide range of services, focusing on creating a work environment that mirrors mainstream settings. It emphasises empowering language, maximising independence, and providing opportunities aligned with mainstream job standards. The Coffee Shop at Health Hub Morayfield exemplifies their mission, offering a venue for 14 workers with cognitive disabilities and serving as a community focal point.
Governance and Community Support
Annual elections allow members to choose a board that advocates for their interests. This ensures that members with disabilities have a say in decisions that affect their lives. The Co-op also thrives on the backing of individual supporters, organisations, and governmental bodies, receiving assistance through grants, volunteering, and donations.
All of these elements contribute to a framework where people with disabilities can enjoy positive experiences and skill development, all while operating on an equal platform with their peers.
